Job Summary:

The Coordinator, Centennial Science Labs shall work under the direction of the Director of Lab Operations and Budgets, to support the delivery of high-quality instructional services in science laboratory facilities at the PPSC Centennial Campus (CC).

Duties & Responsibilities:

Science Laboratory Operations & Instructional Support
• Prepare or assist in preparation of reagents, percentage and molarity stock solutions, microbiological media, and other instructional materials.
• Troubleshoot laboratory experiments and equipment malfunctions.
• Maintain compliant storage of chemicals, biological materials, preserved specimens, and laboratory tools.
• Ensure laboratory technology and instructional equipment remain functional and available.
• Oversee chemical and biological waste disposal in compliance with the PPSC Chemical Hygiene Plan and all applicable regulations as designated by the Director.

Supervision, Training & Team Leadership
• Hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate part-time Lab Assistants and work-study employees assigned to science labs.
• Train laboratory personnel and faculty in chemical handling, biological safety practices, equipment use, and standard operating procedures.
• Maintain safety and hazard communication training documentation.
• Promote safe laboratory practices while managing multiple instructional priorities.
• Assist with backup and leave support for other SEM lab coordinators across the district on an as needed basis, to assure that all science, engineering, and animal labs receive proper support.

Inventory Management & Record Keeping
• Maintain and update inventory databases for laboratory equipment, chemicals, biological materials, and supplies in compliance with state and local regulations.
• Ensure accurate chemical documentation, hazard classification, labeling, and storage.
• Maintain compliant storage procedures for chemicals, microorganisms, preserved specimens, and laboratory materials.
• Ensure appropriate hazardous signage is posted in laboratory and storage areas.
• Track higher-hazard chemicals and support laboratory systems to promote safety and efficiency.

Equipment Maintenance & Technical Support
• Coordinate repair, servicing, and calibration of laboratory apparatus and associated software.
• Notify Facilities of major equipment failures.
• Operate and troubleshoot specialized laboratory equipment, including autoclaves, thermocyclers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
• Provide maintenance reports, certification updates, and cost tracking information to the Director.

Chemical & Biological Safety Compliance
• Oversee chemical waste disposal and biohazard decontamination in accordance with the PPSC Chemical Hygiene Plan and all applicable regulations.
• Enforce SOPs for safe handling, labeling, storage, segregation, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Assist with laboratory safety inspections and documentation of corrective actions. Purchasing & Budget Support
• Procure laboratory supplies using P-Card and purchase orders in compliance with institutional and State procurement policies, maintaining purchasing documentation for reconciliation and audit review.
• Assist the Director with cost tracking, reporting, and operational budget support. Organizational & Institutional Support
• Partner with the Director to standardize procedures and maintain compliance across science and engineering laboratories.
• Assist with documentation for certifications, audits, and regulatory reporting.
• Provide recommendations for improved space utilization, workflow design, safety mitigation, and long-term equipment planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One year of professional-level work experience in a laboratory setting
• Completed bachelor's degree in a science field from a Higher Learning Commission accredited institution OR completed an associate's degree in a science field from a regionally accredited institution with two years of professional level experience performing similar duties to those described for this position.
• Prior supervisory experience.
• Experience using word processing, spreadsheet software, and data entry.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and great attention to detail.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge. Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Successfule completion of one college laboratory course in microbiology AND one college laboratory college course in organic chemistry.
• Two or more years of professional-level work experience in a laboratory setting at a postsecondary institution, including knowledge and experience with all safety regulations.
• One or more years of supervisory experience.
• Prior experience with purchasing, record-keeping, and using Banner.
