Who We Are:
Embedded peer tutors in STEM classes.
Job Summary:
STEM Embedded Tutors (ETs) work as peer tutors in the classroom. ETs will be paired with faculty to help students in their classes by articulating or demonstrating class materials. This position is open for the Fall 2026 semester only. To remain eligible for the position, candidates must enroll in at least six credit hours at CCD for the Fall 2026 semester.
The EXCEL! Zone is CCD's tutoring center, offering academic support in a variety of subjects. The EXCEL! Zone is collaborating with STEM faculty to provide direct, in-classroom assistance to students and instructors by hiring embedded tutors.
This position will also further the professional and academic careers of the embedded tutor. ETs will gain skills in collaborative learning, critical thinking, effective communication (oral and written), metacognition, and self-regulation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Embedded Tutors (ETs) will:
Attend the course and/or labs taught by the paired faculty member and assist students in the class as directed.
Meet with paired faculty members bi-weekly.
Hold office hours and/or tutoring sessions for students enrolled in faculty member's course, as coordinated with the faculty member.
Attend all-day andragogical training prior to the start of Fall classes (the week of July 27. The exact date will be confirmed over the summer).
Attend mid-semester andragogical training as scheduled.
Work as a tutor in the EXCEL! Zone drop-in tutoring lab.
Interact professionally with students and staff from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
Collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds including those with a disability and members of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, nontraditional student, and LGBTQ + communities.
STEM ETs will be embedded in at least one course. They will commit to attending all classes of the course at the specified time, to attending some additional training and meetings, and to hosting some office hours, workshops/reviews, and/or study groups outside of class. The minimum weekly commitment will be approximately 8 hours per week per embedded tutoring section. Tutors with a work-study award may have the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week if they would like, either as an ET or both as an ET and in the drop-in lab.
Competencies/KSAs:
Must have a mastery of the course material.
Minimum Qualifications:
Faculty referral: ETs must be referred to the program by a CCD faculty member in the relevant department. Please use the faculty member as a reference for your application.
ETs must have passed the course they will tutor or a higher-level course in the same sequence within the department.
Credit requirement: Must be taking or planning to take at least six credit hours of classes in the Fall 2026 semester.
If a qualified candidate has submitted the FAFSA and is not eligible for a work-study award, they may be funded by the EXCEL Zone for a non-work-study position. The availability of departmentally funded positions varies by semester.
