Job Summary:

The Disability Support Specialist ensures that students with disabilities have equitable and independent access to academic programs, specialized hardware, and instructional materials. This role involves evaluating complex student needs, providing individual training on adaptive tools, and serving as a technical consultant to faculty and staff. Additionally, the Coordinator supports the Disability Specialist team by conducting interactive appointments to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations in alignment with state and federal disability laws.
Reports to: Director of Accessibility Services
Minimum Qualifications:
• Completed Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with one year of professional level experience working with persons with disabilities OR completed Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution with two years of professional level experience working with persons with disabilities.
• Demonstrated experience with AT software/hardware across Windows, Mac, and mobile platforms.
Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge. Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Completed Master’s degree in a related field.
• Two or more years of experience in an educational environment using accessibility tools and software.
• Experience with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas, Blackboard, or D2L.
• Ability to communicate bilingually or via American Sign Language (ASL).
• Strong understanding of WCAG 2.0 and disability law (ADA/504).
• Ability to read, write, and speak fluent Spanish
Duties & Responsibilities:
Technical Support
• Maintain and troubleshoot a comprehensive suite of assistive technologies (AT), including screen readers, magnification software, speech-to-text, and hardware such as braille embossers.
• Manage the procurement, installation, and licensing of hardware and software; evaluate new or upgraded technologies for accessibility and compatibility with current campus platforms.
• Maintain a detailed inventory of AT equipment and accounts.
• Collaborate with ITSS regarding hardware/software interface issues, upgraded versions, and vendor product conflicts.
• Support Testing Professional as needed (proctoring, formatting, reading, or scribing for accommodative testing).
Student Assessment & Training
• Conduct individual consultations to determine appropriate AT solutions based on a student’s specific functional limitations.
• Create and deliver personalized training programs, video tutorials and accessibility resources to help students reach competency with various AT tools.
• Provide ongoing support for students as needed.
Disability Specialist Support
• Conduct initial and adjustment interactive appointments with students and evaluate provider documentation to determine eligibility for reasonable accommodations in accordance with the ADA, ADAAA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
• Facilitate the communication between students and faculty.
• Maintain accurate internal documentation of student interactions.
• Placement, tracking, inventory and documentation of accommodative furniture.
Testing Support
• Oversee the conversion of testing materials into accessible formats.
• Proctor student exams as needed.
Campus Collaboration & Advocacy
• Partner with faculty to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and develop accessibility training for the institution.
• Advise campus departments (Library, Bookstore, Distance Learning, etc.) on equipment compatibility and accessibility issues.
• Stay current on Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, ADA standards, and WCAG 2.0/2.1 standards.
• Participate in specialist meetings to improve accommodative services.
Competencies/KSAs:
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts to users with varying levels of digital literacy.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware issues, involving minor lifting of equipment (up to 25 lbs).
• Ability to work at different campuses as required by departmental needs.
• Ability to navigate differences effectively and respectfully in the workplace.
• Adhere to college policies and procedures.
