Job Summary:

The Music Theory Embedded Tutor (ET) works as a peer tutor within a Music Theory classroom and is paired with a faculty member to support student learning. The Embedded Tutor assists students by articulating, reinforcing, and demonstrating course concepts and materials during class, labs, office hours, and tutoring sessions.
The EXCEL! Zone, CCD's tutoring center, partners with Music faculty to provide direct classroom support through the Embedded Tutoring Program. This student employment opportunity is offered on a semester-by-semester basis. Embedded
Music Theory Embedded Tutors are assigned to at least one course and are expected to attend its scheduled class meetings. The position requires approximately eight hours per week for each embedded tutoring section, including classroom attendance, tutoring, office hours, training, faculty meetings, workshops, reviews, and study groups. Students with a work-study award may have opportunities to work additional hours, up to 20 hours per week, depending on availability and program needs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Music Theory Embedded Tutor will:
• Attend the assigned course and/or labs taught by the paired faculty member.
• Assist students during class or lab activities as directed by the faculty member.
• Reinforce and demonstrate Music Theory concepts and course materials.
• Meet with the paired faculty member on a biweekly basis to discuss course content, student learning needs, and planned tutoring support.
• Hold office hours and/or tutoring sessions for students enrolled in the assigned course, as coordinated with the faculty member.
• Provide one-on-one academic assistance to CCD students.
• Facilitate small-group study sessions, workshops, reviews, and other collaborative learning activities.
• Provide tutoring support in designated locations, including KC 112A, KC 112B, the fifth floor of the King Center, or the EXCEL! Zone drop-in tutoring lab, as needed.
• Attend required Embedded Tutor training sessions and program meetings.
• Communicate and interact professionally with students, faculty, and staff from diverse cultural, academic, and personal backgrounds.
• Foster an inclusive and respectful learning environment for students from diverse communities and educational experiences.
• Maintain student confidentiality and follow applicable college and EXCEL! Zone guidelines.
• Work collaboratively with the paired faculty member, EXCEL! Zone staff, and other tutors.
• Complete assigned responsibilities reliably and manage scheduled class, tutoring, training, and meeting commitments
• Be available to attend all scheduled meetings of the assigned course and/or labs.
• Be available for additional training, meetings, tutoring sessions, office hours, workshops, reviews, and study groups outside of class.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must possess strong written and aural Music Theory skills.
• Must have successfully completed the course to be supported or a higher-level course within the same departmental sequence.
• Must demonstrate mastery of the relevant course material.
• Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in at least six credit hours at CCD during the semester of employment.
• Must receive a recommendation from a CCD Music faculty member and use the recommending faculty member as a reference on the application.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching assistant, or peer-support experience preferred. Demonstrated communication and leadership skills, interest in helping fellow students succeed, and eligibility for work-study funding are desirable.
Priority will be given to qualified candidates who can provide proof of a work-study award. Applicants must complete the FAFSA for the current academic year to be considered for work-study funding. Qualified candidates who have submitted the FAFSA but are not eligible for work-study may be considered for departmentally funded employment when funding is available. Departmentally funded positions vary by semester.
