Who We Are:

Otero College Child Development Services provides comprehensive services, including full-day early childhood education, for children and their families through home-based and center-based services located throughout southern Colorado. It is the mission of Otero College Child Development Services to provide high quality, comprehensive early childhood education programs for children from birth to compulsory school age; to provide parent education programs that strengthen the family, develop basic literacy, encourage job training and personal development; and to develop community partnerships and coordination of community-based services.

Job Summary:

Assist the bus driver at Manzanola Head Start. Ensure children have a safe, comfortable environment while on the bus. Assist children getting on and off the bus and throughout the duration of the bus ride.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Adhere to Otero College Child Development Services policies and procedures.
2. Comply with Head Start Performance Standards and State of Colorado Rules and Regulations for Child Care Centers.
3. Support and implement the mission and goals of Otero College Child Development Services.
4. Report and document any suspected child abuse and neglect in compliance with Colorado law and agency policies and procedures.
5. Encourage and support parent engagement in all aspects of the Head Start program.
6. Participate in all required in-service training and applicable workshops.
7. Work as part of a team providing a welcoming environment for families and visitors.
8. Be an effective problem solver.
9. Become familiar with and implement the Child Development Services Work Plan.
10. Assist the driver in case of emergency and participate in emergency evacuation practices once a month.
11. Know program policies and safety procedures and follow them.
12. Comfort crying children and be responsible for teaching simple songs and finger plays while on the bus.
13. Oversee safety of children and engage in age-appropriate interactions with children while on the bus.
14. Properly put children in and out of the correct child restraint system on the bus.
15. Deliver messages between the parents and the school.
16. Responsible for transporting children’s medication and returning it home in the evenings.
17. Educate children and parents in transportation/pedestrian safety.
18. Check bus after each route to ensure no child is left on board.
19. Assist with set-up and clearing of buses and restraints (car seats and restraints).
20. May assist with other center related duties when needed and directed by the Center Manager.
21. Perform other program related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Competencies/KSAs:

1. Experience working with Preschool children.
2. Ability to handle responsibility for children on the bus and to request assistance and guidance through appropriate channels.
3. Able to lift children up to 50 lbs.
4. Be computer literate with knowledge for Microsoft office programs as it pertains to your position.
5. Be eligible to work in a childcare setting.
6. Have valid First Aid and Infant/Child CPR card and keep current or obtain within 30 days of employment if applicable to position.
7. Positive role models for children; language, dress, and behavior must be appropriate to a childcare setting.
8. Be able to establish an atmosphere of trust and respect with HS families, children and staff.
9. Able to adhere to strict standards of confidentiality.
10. Be able to work effectively as a member of a team.
11. Must submit regular on-going medical statements signed and dated by a licensed physician or other health care professional and self-reported annual health history, verifying that they are in good mental, physical and emotional health appropriate for the position hired for. Pursuant to State of Colorado Rules Regulating Child Care Centers and HS Performance Standards.
12. Demonstrate the highest standard of integrity, truthfulness, honesty and ethics.
