Job Summary:
The Assistant Coach is responsible for supporting the Head Coach in all aspects of an intercollegiate athletic program at Otero College. This includes coaching, academic monitoring and support, athlete recruitment, program operations, community engagement, and team travel. The Assistant Coach plays a critical role in creating a positive, inclusive, and development-focused environment for student-athletes and represents the college in both athletic and community settings.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Team & Athlete Support
1. Assist with the recruitment and recommendation of prospective student-athletes.
2. Contribute to practices, competitions, and skill instruction, including individual athlete development.
3. Support athletes in physical conditioning, injury prevention, and health awareness.
4. Help supervise practices, film sessions, and scheduled training activities.
5. Serve as acting Head Coach during games, practices, or events in the absence of the Head Coach, when authorized by the Athletic Director.
6. Assist in monitoring academic progress of student-athletes; help manage study tables and tutor coordination.
7. Promote athlete accountability in attendance, academic integrity, and personal conduct.
Program Operations & Logistics
1. Support the planning and coordination of team travel, lodging, and meals.
2. Assist in the setup and management of all home competitions and practice facilities.
3. Help track and manage equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
4. Collaborate with the Head Coach on data collection, statistics, scouting reports, and player evaluations.
5. Aid in planning and leading individual and team camps, clinics, or special events hosted by the college.
6. Assist with public relations efforts, including submitting press releases, athlete highlights, and program updates to the college’s marketing or PR department.
College & Community Engagement
1. Foster positive relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, and local stakeholders.
2. Represent the athletic program and college at community events and fundraising activities.
3. Build and maintain recruiting relationships with area high schools, clubs, and relevant organizations.
4. Contribute to college-wide and departmental initiatives that promote student success and community engagement.
5. Support the planning and execution of NJCAA-sanctioned events, tournaments, and on-campus competitions hosted by Otero College.
Facility Coordination & Game Management
1. Assist in managing facility usage across college and community partners, including city facilities and high school usage agreements.
2. Support athletic department staff with the operations and logistics of other Otero sports programs when requested.
3. Contribute to intramural sports programming and assist with large events hosted on campus.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Obtain and maintain a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (Class C CDL with Passenger Endorsement).
2. Serve as a trained driver of college vehicles for team travel, following all CDL safety protocols including pre- and post-trip inspections.
3. Monitor and report any vehicle issues to the Athletic Director. Submit a Motor Vehicle Record annually.
4. Help enforce program expectations, discipline, and compliance with institutional, NJCAA, and academic standards.
5. Promote an inclusive team culture where student-athletes from all backgrounds feel supported, respected, and valued.
6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.

Knowledge of coaching principles, athlete development, recruitment practices, and NJCAA regulations.
Skill in coaching, mentoring, communication, organization, and coordinating athletic operations and events.
Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, colleagues, community partners, and prospective recruits.
Ability to support student-athlete success through leadership, accountability, and a commitment to academic and personal development.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and maintain compliance with institutional, athletic, and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of experience, training, and education
• Coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills
• Valid and unrestricted driver’s license with the ability to obtain a CDL with passenger endorsement. Proof of a valid driver’s license must be provided upon hire.
• Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and travel
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree
• Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience
• Experience with athlete recruitment
• Familiarity with NJCAA rules and eligibility compliance
