Who We Are:

Otero College Child Development Services provides comprehensive services, including full-day early childhood education, for children and their families through home-based and center-based services located throughout southern Colorado. It is the mission of Otero College Child Development Services to provide high quality, comprehensive early childhood education programs for children from birth to compulsory school age; to provide parent education programs that strengthen the family, develop basic literacy, encourage job training and personal development; and to develop community partnerships and coordination of community-based services.

Job Summary:

To provide support and assistance where needed within the center in maintaining a safe, healthy and supportive environment for children.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Adhere to Otero College Child Development Services policies and procedures.
2. Comply with Head Start Performance Standards and State of Colorado Rules and Regulations for Child Care Centers.
3. Support and implement the mission and goals of Otero College Child Development Services.
4. Encourage and support parent engagement in all aspects of the Head Start program.
5. Participate in all required in-service training and applicable workshops.
6. Work as part of a team providing a welcoming environment for families and visitors.
7. Be an effective problem solver.
8. Report and document any suspected child abuse and neglect in compliance with Colorado law and agency policies and procedures.
9. Understand and implement Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Act, and Child Policies and Procedures as they apply to program management and supervision.
10. Assist in maintaining a safe environment for children and staff in assigned area.
11. Assist teacher in maintaining a safe and healthy classroom environment.
12. Help supervise and interact with children during meals and snacks. Make lunch a learning and social experience, using child-sized portions and not letting food be used for punishment or reward.
13. Monitor and model proper hygiene
14. Be informed and alert to child neglect, abuse, and report to appropriate person.
15. Classroom janitorial duties as necessary.
16. Actively participate in activities with children.
17. Know and follow emergency plans and procedures.
18. Assist in implementing positive guidance and management techniques.
19. Follow procedures for releasing children (know where to find release forms).
20. Help supervise children during field trips/outdoors/throughout daily activities.
21. Assist teachers in carrying out lesson plans that are prepared by the teacher.
22. Help prepare materials for classroom activities and projects.
23. Must be prepared to take directions from the teacher and be willing to learn classroom procedures.
24. Should be prepared to work one-on-one with children.
25. Will encourage and support parent involvement in all aspects of the Head Start program.
26. Take directions and be willing to learn the procedures of the area which assigned.
27. Other program related duties assigned by supervisory personnel and/or director.
28. Other related duties assigned by supervisory personnel and/or Executive Director.

Competencies/KSAs:

1. Ability to handle responsibility as a support within the center and to request assistant and guidance through appropriate channels.
3. Able to lift children up to 50 lbs.
4. Have physical ability to provide direct care to infants, toddler and preschoolers. Be able to physically keep a child safe and be able get to child level. This would include squatting, sitting on toddler/preschool chairs or floor, and kneeling.
5. Be computer literate with knowledge for Microsoft office programs as it pertains to your position.
6. Be eligible to work in a child care setting.
7. Have valid First Aid and Infant/Child CPR card and keep current or obtain within 30 days of employment if applicable to position.
8. Positive role model for children; language, dress, and behavior must be appropriate to a child care setting.
9. Be able to establish an atmosphere of trust and respect with HS families, children and staff.
10. Able to adhere to strict standards of confidentiality.
11. Be able to work effectively as a member of a team.
12. Must submit regular on-going medical statements signed and dated by a licensed physician or other health care professional and self-reported annual health history, verifying that they are in good mental, physical and emotional health appropriate for the position hired for. Pursuant to State of Colorado Rules Regulating Child Care Centers and HS Performance Standards.
13. Demonstrate the highest standard of integrity, truthfulness, honesty and ethics.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Experience working with children ages 3 years old to school age.
