Job Summary:

Otero College seeks a student centered faculty member who is passionate about teaching, learning, and student success. As a comprehensive community college, faculty play a vital role in advancing the college's mission by providing high-quality instruction, fostering meaningful student engagement, and preparing learners for academic achievement, workforce readiness, and lifelong growth.

Full-time faculty are responsible for delivering effective instruction, maintaining academic excellence, supporting student retention and completion through advising and mentoring, and contributing to ongoing program and curriculum development. Faculty actively participate in college governance, assessment, recruitment, community engagement, and professional development activities. Through collaboration, innovation, and service, faculty help create an inclusive learning environment that empowers students to become the best version of themselves while strengthening the communities Otero College serves.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Instructional Duties:
• Prepare and update course syllabi annually; distribute and review with students.
• Teach assigned courses and maintain scheduled class times.
• Use instructional methods appropriate for diverse student backgrounds and learning styles.
• Create a supportive and engaging learning environment.
• Revise teaching methods for improved learning outcomes.
• Promote and assess achievement of course/program competencies.
• Maintain accurate student records including attendance and grades.
• Participate in curriculum development and revision.
Advising & Student Support:
• Advise and/or mentor students in assigned programs.
• Assist students with academic and/or career planning.
Assessment, Curriculum & Program Review:
• Complete program assessments and curricular updates at course, program, and institutional levels to meet outcome measures.
• Participate in articulation efforts with high schools and colleges.
• Participate in state-mandated program reviews and reporting.
• Maintain an active Advisory Board, ensuring regular engagement with industry stakeholders by organizing and leading a minimum of two advisory committee meetings annually.
• Maintain and store documentation including, but not limited to, PQAPs, Advisory Board minutes, equipment lists, and VE-135 follow-up documentation.
Program Specific Duties:
• Oversee all aspects of the MLT and Phlebotomy Programs related to accreditation with the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), including preparing and submitting required reports, outcome measures, and compliance documentation.
• Maintain and review Board of Certification (BOC) exam results through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and completes required surveys (student, employer, and post-exam) for NAACLS and CCCS.
• Attend NAACLS and Clinical Laboratory Educators conferences to maintain program compliance and professional development.
• Oversee clinical internship experiences including maintaining and establishing clinical affiliation agreements, coordinating contracts, scheduling clinical rotations, and ensuring required documentation and compliance.
• Monitor student clinical placements through site visits and ongoing communication with students and clinical partners.
• Coordinate student compliance requirements including drug testing, workers’ compensation documentation, and site-specific requirements.
• Maintain laboratory safety programs for students and faculty, including chemical safety and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), safety equipment inspections and repairs, biohazard waste disposal, safety training, and documentation.
• Maintain required documentation such as volunteer liability waivers for student venipuncture and skin puncture practice.
• Prepare MLT/Phlebotomy budget and Perkins budget requests
• Maintain and oversees maintenance contracts and service agreements
• Determine laboratory course fees based on current pricing
• Update student handbook as needed and submit for review to legal and advisory board.
• Engage in 36 hours of documented continuing professional education over three years related to MLT/Phlebotomy Education and professional trends.
• Approve, coordinate, and recommend textbooks, instructional materials, appropriate instructional equipment, and supportive reference material to the appropriate Department Chair.
• Assist the College with ongoing program articulation with other colleges, with area high schools, and other training programs. Serves on the 2:2 evaluation and attends meeting for course requirements pertaining to the MLT/Phlebotomy Department.
• Review student records for graduation eligibility and processes certificate requests.
• Plan and coordinate annual pinning ceremonies for both programs.
• Assist with recruitment of new instructors/faculty and oversees orientation, and coordination of adjunct or newly assigned faculty.
• Teaching load is reduced to 70% to allow for 30% of load for the program administration.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in a field related to credentialing area
• Must hold, or qualify to obtain, a Colorado Career and Technical Education (CTE) Credential
• Current ASCP BOC or ASCPi BOC generalist certification as a medical laboratory scientist.
• Three years of teaching experience
• Knowledge of current NAACLS accreditation procedures and certification or willing to obtain.

• Be creative and committed to teaching excellence by demonstrating an ability to improve all students’ learning by assessing students, programs and campus outcomes and adjusting based on the data.
• Knowledge of effective instructional techniques and innovative modes of course delivery adaptable to a variety of learning styles.
• Knowledge of using current technologies in the classroom and to convey online course content.
• Have effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, students, and administration.
• Educational philosophy in alignment with that of a small rural, comprehensive Community College and enthusiasm for this type of environment and the aspirations of its people.
